ARCO has stated that it will supply ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel in Southern California, considerably ahead of legal standards. This measure is intended to aid in the reduction of soot emissions from Southern California’s metropolitan municipal fleets.
The new diesel fuel will be accessible to operators of urban municipal fleets that have been modified with catalytic exhaust control equipment as soon as they request it. ARCO’s announcement comes as the California Air Resources Board (ARB) is working to finalize new emission regulations for urban buses in the state, which will be more strict than the present federal requirements.
The sulfur content of ARCO’s new fuel will be no more than 15 parts per million, whereas the sulfur content of diesel fuel now used in California averages 120 parts per million, with a maximum sulfur level of 500 parts per million. Other portions of the United States utilize diesel fuel with an average sulfur concentration of 340 parts per million and a maximum sulfur content of 500 parts per million.
The low sulfur gasoline will enable catalytic exhaust aftertreatment for diesel engines, according to ARCO.
The fuel will be produced at ARCO’s Los Angeles Refinery (LAR) in Carson specifically for Southern California.
ARCO revealed plans to test their EC-Diesel fuel in California earlier this year. Low sulfur content (max. 15 ppm) and a variety of other features, such as a high cetane number (min. 57), result in lower emissions with EC fuel. ARCO chose the ultra low sulfur diesel over the more modern EC-Diesel because it can be produced quickly and in large enough quantities to meet projected demand while remaining cost effective.
“ARCO continues to see diesel as a viable fuel of the future, and is committed to providing a diesel product in Southern California that will enable engine and bus manufacturers to meet the new, very strict emission standards that will likely be set next year,” said Roger Truitt, president of ARCO Products Company, the company’s marketing, refining, and marine division.
ARCO, which distributes roughly 20% of the state’s 220,000-barrel-per-day diesel production, said it plans to produce and distribute its new fuel at “competitive costs,” but did not provide exact figures. Low sulfur gasoline is expected to cost about 5-cents per gallon more than current CARB diesel, according to the ARB.
ARCO stated that it will continue to make CARB diesel fuel available to the more than 700,000 diesel-powered vehicles on the road in California that are not equipped with catalytic exhaust after-treatment equipment and thus would not benefit from the use of low sulfur fuel.
Existing diesel fleets might be retrofitted with catalytic emission controls for a fraction of the cost of new equipment or alternative fuel engines. “The MTA is interested in testing ARCO’s new diesel fuel so that we can report to our Board whether it will further our efforts to reduce emissions from transit vehicles… as the agency prepares to replace the remainder of its fleet with new, low emission buses, it is interested in evaluating cost effective alternatives,” said Tom Conner, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transit Authority’s (MTA) head of transit operations.
What type of gas is ARCO?
Marathon Petroleum now uses the ARCO brand as a gasoline service station brand in the United States and Mexico. The ARCO brand is licensed to BP for exclusive use in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington for the sale of gasoline in those states.
Outside of the BP areas of the northwest, any independent station can adopt the ARCO brand in any territory covered by the Marathon Petroleum distribution network.
It operates around 1,300 gas stations in the western United States, as well as five gas stations in northwestern Mexico (as of 2017).
Do all gas stations have diesel pumps?

If you must line for gas, exercise common sense when you reach the front; utilize every available pump, even if it is on the wrong side of your car’s filler cap; and, if possible, pull ahead once you’ve filled up to allow someone else to use the pump while you pay. How do you tell if a pump is gas or diesel?
If you didn’t know, the size of a diesel nozzle, or mouth, is larger than that of a gas pump. This means that putting a diesel nozzle in a gas tank without changing it or taking out part of the fuel system is physically impossible. If you’re not sure if the fuel pump is for diesel or gas, there’s an easy way to tell.
The fuel nozzle will not fit in a gas car with a diesel fuel nozzle. Attempting to shove the fuel nozzle into the tank is not a good idea. In addition, if you’re still unsure, speak with a gas station employee. Fueling your vehicle is outlawed in several states, such as Oregon, so you should never have this problem there.
Reading the label on the gasoline pump is another way to find out. Most diesel pumps now have a “Diesel Only” sign on them. Many gas pumps, on the other hand, will say “Unleaded” or “Regular Unleaded.” If you don’t see one of these labels, though, you can safely assume it isn’t diesel fuel.
Diesel is Heavier than Gas
Diesel is significantly heavier than gasoline, which has a higher octane rating. This means that putting diesel in your car will cause it to shut down rapidly. You’ll either have to tow your vehicle or replace the complete gasoline system if this happens.
Diesel has Higher Ignition Temperature
The main problem is that gasoline ignites at a lower temperature than diesel fuel. This means that the gas will start burning at a lower temperature than diesel. If not treated immediately, this might cause your car to stall and possibly lead to further issues down the road.
Diesel & Gas are not Interchangeable
Using the incorrect type of fuel in your car can result in serious issues. Many diesel engines, for example, require you to use a special high-quality diesel fuel with a low sulfur level. If you try to put this in a gas tank, you will almost certainly harm it. It won’t happen right away, but it will happen eventually if done consistently.
Corrosion is another issue, especially with high sulfur fuels. Metal components such as fuel injectors and other metal components can be easily corroded by sulfur in gas. It’s important to remember that even a small amount of fuel pollution might cause problems.
Why diesel is so expensive?
The cost of diesel fuel is higher. Diesel fuel is subject to a higher federal excise tax than gasoline (24.4 cents per gallon vs. 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline), and diesel fuel is occasionally subject to a higher state tax.
