Does Diesel Burn Hotter Than Gas?

According to a new study published in Scientific Reports by Canadian, European, and American scientists, newer diesel engines are actually cleaner than gasoline engines in several ways, and their visible pollutants are less harmful than the invisible toxins emitted by gas engines. Newer diesel engines, unlike earlier ones, have diesel particle filters that catch the majority of the toxic particulate matter. However, the amount of nitrogen oxide released by diesel engines continues to be an issue.

How hot does diesel burn in an engine?

Gasoline Engine

Diesel Engine

Diesel engines, on the other hand, have a 20:1 initial compression ratio, which heats the air to 1,200° F or higher before injecting fuel into the combustion chamber. When the fuel ignites, the resulting combustion raises the temperature by another 2,600 degrees Fahrenheit, bringing the total initial combustion temperature to 3,800 degrees Fahrenheit.

The piston drops lower in the cylinder as soon as the engine starts. This effectively increases the combustion chamber’s capacity while lowering the compression ratio, lowering the chamber’s temperature. It reaches a stable temperature of around 2800° F. Unlike a gasoline engine, the diesel engine maintains this combustion temperature by signaling the piston to drop lower in the cylinder whenever the temperature rises.

Does diesel burn cooler?

When a gasoline engine is driven excessively lean, it loses its power potential and risks overheating or, worse, melting a piston. Gas engines will spill more fuel at wide-open throttle in order to cool down combustion. A diesel, on the other hand, is the polar opposite. The engine operates cooler when the gasoline is lean.
