WASHINGTON, D.C., October 3, 2018 — According to the latest analysis conducted by Rhein and Associates, with additional data provided by the Diesel Technology Forum, almost 900,000 heavy-duty diesel engines were built in locations across the United States in 2017.

“Heavy-duty diesel engines built in the United States are the workhorse of the American economy, powering half of the country’s economic sectors with proven, affordable, efficient, and near-zero emissions technology,” said Allen Schaeffer, the Forum’s executive director. “Diesel is the powertrain of choice for agricultural, mining, and construction equipment, as well as commercial vehicles (trucks and buses), locomotives, tug boats, and other goods-movement equipment.”

Heavy-duty clean diesel engines directly supported $3.4 trillion in economic activity in the United States in 2017. Heavy-duty diesel engines are vital to the agricultural, fishing, forestry, mining, construction, and logistics industries. These diesel-dependent industrial sectors have expanded by 10% since 2008, according to the US Bureau of Economic Analysis. These industries account for more than 11% of total private-sector industrial activity, roughly equaling the utility and information technology industries combined.

“Heavy-duty diesel engine manufacturing facilities in the United States are creating the latest new-generation diesel technologies, which help to improve air quality by reducing emissions,” Schaeffer added. “The more the fuel savings and emission reductions offered to the communities in which they operate, whether from a commercial truck, a tugboat, a pickup truck, or an ambulance, the more the newest, most efficient, near-zero emission engines may be put to work.”

According to the Diesel Technological Forum’s most recent economic estimates, the manufacture of clean diesel engines, as well as the cars and equipment they power, technology maintenance, and fuel production, support 1.25 million employment across the United States.
