Maruti Suzuki’s efforts to keep ahead of the competition are exemplified with the launch of the Celerio Diesel.
Maruti Suzuki released the Celerio tiny car a year ago, and it was the first automobile to have an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT), though only on the fuel version. The Celerio enabled Maruti Suzuki maintain its dominant position. Since February 2014, the Celerio has had a 61 percent market share in the lower hatchback segment, which has increased to 71 percent in just over a year. It was possibly the only little automobile at the time that offered the convenience of automatic transmission at a reasonable price when compared to the manual gearbox variant.
Celerio makes the news once more, but this time for a different cause. It is the first Maruti vehicle to include a two-cylinder diesel engine. The engine has the same name (DDIS) as the one that powers the Swift and Ertiga. The Swift and Ertiga are powered by a 1.3-litre Fiat common-rail turbo diesel engine that produces 75 and 90 horsepower, respectively. This engine has a bore and stroke of 69.6 mm and 82 mm, respectively. The engine is mounted transversely in the front of both automobiles, and the drive is sent to the front wheels via a five-speed manual transmission. The same principle is used in the Celerio, which has a transversely mounted two-cylinder 793cc common-rail turbo diesel engine that drives the front wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission.
This all-aluminum engine, known internally as E08A and marketed as DDiS 125, was created from the ground up with a reduced cylinder count and meets BS IV emission standards. The DDiS 125 is claimed to be the world’s smallest automobile diesel engine, weighing 89kg compared to the engine that powers the Swift or Ertiga, which weighs 128kg. A tiny BorgWarner turbocharger and an intercooler give the light weight boost. The engine breathes through four valves per cylinder and produces 47 bhp at 3600 rpm and 125 Nm at 2000 rpm. The engine, which is the result of a Rs 900 crore investment that includes supplier investment, is said to have a fuel efficiency of 27.62 kmpl, which is higher than the Beat’s three-cylinder 938cc engine. Beat is said to have a fuel efficiency of 25.44 kilometers per liter.
The Celerio’s diesel engine, which is 97 percent localized, is the result of four years of intensive development and testing. This engine incorporates a significant amount of Maruti Suzuki influence. The engine was created at Suzuki’s Japanese factory. The Japanese company’s fuel injection block, coupled with a high-pressure fuel pump and a fuel control unit, monitors fuel injection in the engine with the help of Bosch. Despite the Celerio’s 15:1 compression ratio, industry analysts argue that the diesel engine is not the quietest. The bore and stroke measurements are 77.0 mm x 85.1 mm. Despite producing more torque than the Swift’s engine, the Celerio’s diesel engine is expected to be used in the company’s other forthcoming models.
“By launching the Celerio diesel, we will be able to extend beyond the Swift, Ritz, Ertiga, and Ciaz models,” said Kenichi Ayukawa, MD and CEO of Maruti Suzuki India. “However, despite the success of AMT in the petrol version of the car, we have no plans to bring in AMT for diesel cars.” The Celerio’s AMT version, which has sold 95000 units since its launch in February 2014, accounts for about a third of the Celerio’s sales. Since the introduction of AMT in the Celerio and Alto K10, the firm has struggled to keep up with demand. Maruti Suzuki has built up the capacity to produce more than 1 lakh units of diesel engines per year, and the newly released engine will undoubtedly help the business access several potential markets in the near future. Maruti Suzuki rolled out its 15 millionth car at its Manesar facility in May 2015, a Swift VDi model, and the company’s push into the budget sector is expected to significantly strengthen the company’s market position in diesel-powered vehicles.
