TURIN – Fiat S.p.powertrain A.’s business will take full control of a Fiat-GM joint manufacturing venture in Poland that produces diesel engines.

Fiat claims that having full ownership of the factory will enable it to better utilize its capacity. The facility will begin producing a two-cylinder 900cc gasoline engine for the Italian manufacturer. The engine will make its debut in the Fiat 500 minicar later this year.

GM stated that it did not believe it was necessary to maintain an ownership in the manufacturing activity because the joint venture was under managerial control.

Fiat and GM Europe announced on Jan. 27 that they had signed a preliminary share transfer agreement for Fiat Powertrain Technologies to purchase GM’s 50% stake in the partnership, which is called Fiat-GM Powertrain Polska and is located 350 kilometers south of Warsaw in Bielsko-Biala.

Fiat Powertrain Technologies will continue to run the factory, which will continue to build 1.3-liter diesel engines for Fiat and GM.

The 1.3-liter engine is used by GM in Opel/Vauxhall models such as the Astra and Corsa sedans, as well as the Meriva and Agila minivans.

The Fiat Punto, Panda, and 500 vehicles, as well as the Idea and Doblo vans, employ the engine. The engine is offered by Fiat’s Alfa Romeo in the Mito, while Lancia uses it in the Ypsilon vehicle and the Musa minivan.

When the two businesses ended their five-year cooperation in February 2005, the factory became a combined property of Fiat and GM, and it is the final remaining relationship between the two corporations.

In 2005, GM paid Fiat $2 billion to cancel a put option that would have required GM to purchase 80 percent of Fiat’s automotive operations. In 2000, GM paid $2.4 billion for a 20% stake in Fiat Auto.

Fiat and Tata Motors inked a contract in 2017 for the production and sale of 2.0 liter Multijet II turbo diesel engines, which will begin in the second half of 2018.
