When Jaguar first introduced the XF three years ago, this is the car they should have been selling. Although four-cylinder diesels don’t set hearts racing, they’re what sell in the European executive category, which means that, since the XF went on sale, Jag has basically ruled itself out of the running for the vast majority of potential purchasers.
Even so, it’s better to be late than never. We’ve already driven a prototype version of the XF 2.2D, but this is the first time we’ve driven one in production trim on UK roads.
The engine is the new Ford/PSA unit, which has already been seen in the Mondeo and Peugeot 508, but has been altered to turn the rear wheels in a north-south configuration. With 188bhp and a massive 332lb/ft torque peak, the power output is marginally lower than what Ford claims for the transverse installation. The 2.2D SE starts at £30,950 and rises to £43,050 in the top-of-the-range ‘Portfolio’ trim.
The eight-speed automatic transmission that lies between the engine and the rear wheels is unquestionably the most ingenious part of the powertrain. There’s no manual option, as with all XFs, and the gearbox must maximize performance while still delivering those all-important CO2 numbers that determine how much tax users will pay for the car.
Who makes Jaguar 2.2 Diesel engines?
The 4.2-litre supercharged V8 engine was replaced in 2008 by a new 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine with 470 PS (346 kW; 464 horsepower) and Active Differential Control (electronically controlled rear differential).
In 2009, a new 3.0-litre V6 diesel engine replaced the 2.7-litre V6 diesel engine. The 3.0-litre TDV6 engine utilized in the Land Rover Discovery 4 is paired with a new ZF 8-speed automated transmission. The AJ-V6D Gen III was available in two tuning options. The diesel engines are a product of Ford and Peugeot-joint Citroen’s venture.

Jaguar is still known for its massive 5.3-litre V12 petrol engines from the 1970s and 1980s XJs, so a little 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine obtained from Ford may be perceived as a break from Jaguar’s conventional background.
But don’t worry, the 190 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque engine nevertheless drives the XF with enough power and refinement. It may lack the lethargic power of an old-style V12 petrol engine, or even the smoothness of today’s six-cylinder engines, but you’ll appreciate it when you’re filling up at the gas station.
The Jaguar emblem is still present, as is the recently redesigned XF style, which differs from the previous model in that the headlamps no longer have a circular cut-out into the hood. It’s undoubtedly the most attractive car in its class, and it stands out from the sea of Mercedes and BMWs on our roads.
The inside is likewise well-designed and opulent, with features like the gear selector rising up from the transmission tunnel at start-up lending the vehicle a premium feel. The smooth stitched leather top to the dashboard is particularly appealing; such surfaces are all too often cluttered in modern automobiles, resulting in several reflections on the windscreen.

The V-8 and V-6 gasoline and diesel engines used by Jaguar Land Rover were built by Ford. The Ford engines were replaced in late 2015 with engines from Jaguar Land Rover’s new Ingenium engine family, ensuring compliance with the new Euro 6 emissions requirements.

The 187bhp variant tempts us, but the price difference isn’t worth the additional operating costs for fleet buyers. The sole flaw in the drivetrain is the noisy four-cylinder engine, which detracts from an otherwise silky smooth ride.
Numbers are important in the Jaguar XF 2.2 diesel, but not horsepower. The base model costs £29,950, but Jaguar expects most buyers to choose for the SE Business trim, which adds sat-nav for £1,550 more.

The previous 187bhp 2.2-litre diesel engine has been detuned to produce 161bhp. While Jaguar says it is working to reduce the 149g/km CO2 number, the 52.3mpg fuel economy is the same as the 187bhp model’s.
So, who would pick this one? According to Jaguar, fleet buyers. The 161bhp output was chosen by the Belgian market, where engines with this power (and lower) receive a significant tax benefit. However, there are advantages for UK purchasers, as this car is four insurance classes lower (33E) and £4,000 cheaper than the 187bhp model.

On the road, the Jaguar XF on 17-inch or 19-inch wheels is as relaxing and comfy as you’d expect from a Jaguar, with a tranquil vibe on highways, but it’s in bends that the XF shines. It’s calm and accurate, with excellent body control and a very athletic demeanor. It’s just as good on the inside.
The cabin is well designed, with some lovely features such as the circular gear selector that rises slowly from the center console when the engine is started. All of the switches have a gorgeous blue glow, which gives the XF cabin a whole distinct image at night. The Jaguar XF isn’t cheap, but it comes well equipped as standard and has a charm and class that few other cars, even from premium brands, can match.
