How much electricity does a wind turbine generate each day?
In the 12 months leading up to April 2022, Australia’s wind farms generated 11.5 percent of our total electricity. Not bad for devices that rely only on the wind that Mother Nature sends our way.
The wind farms that power Bungendore, the Capital and Woodlawn, have powered the town 150 times in the last 24 hours.

The first graph shows how much power they produce (output), while the second shows how much of their overall capacity they produce. Because it’s been so windy, they’re both producing at roughly 90-100 percent of their capacity (their capacity factor).
So, over the course of 24 hours, they’ve generated an average of 130 and 40 megawatt hours every hour, for a total of 170 megawatts (or 170,000 kilowatts). A kilowatt hour is equal to one kilowatt (about the amount utilized by a small vacuum cleaner) produced for one hour. So, for the day, 170,000 x 24 = 4,080,000 kilowatt hours (kwh).
On a daily basis, the average home consumes 19 kilowatt hours. In 2011, Bungendore had roughly 1,000 dwellings. It’s expanded a little since then, so let’s suppose it’s now 1,500, in which case they’d need a total of 28,500 kwh every day, out of a total capacity of 4,080,000 kwh.
In other words, in the last 24 hours, they’ve powered Bungendore around 150 times.
So, certainly, they create enough electricity to power Bungendore, Goulburn, and the majority of Canberra. When these two wind farms are operating at full capacity, they can power about 214,000 houses. Throughout the year, they power roughly 78,000 households on average.
In Bungendore, they would be able to power all 1500 households if they were only running at 1% of total capacity, or barely running.
Bungendore is the first location the power would go because it is closest to the power source, hence Bungendore is effectively powered entirely by wind energy whenever the turbines are turning.
How much electricity can a modest wind turbine produce?
Small wind turbines, also known as micro wind turbines, are utilized for micro-electricity generation rather than big commercial wind turbines like those found in wind farms. Passive yaw systems are more common in small wind turbines than active yaw systems. That didn’t work out. According to my calculations, one rotation of the wind turbine produces 291 watt-hours (an energy unit), but a house consumes around 48,000 watt-hours. I should point out that energy is a rough estimate for a dwelling in the United States. It is substantially lower in the UK, at roughly 12,000 watt-hours. But I’m still off by around 40 percenta that’s big difference. To get enough energy to run a house for a day, you’d need 40 turbines (or 40 revolutions). So, what went wrong here? There are a few alternatives available. Obviously, my calculations could be incorrect. But why are they so far off the mark? Even doubling the wind speed and setting the final air speed to 0 m/s will not provide enough energy.
However, there is another approach to solve physics problem. The turbine in the video has a rated power output of 7 MW (seven million watts). On closer study, the rotation time for a single blade appears to be closer to 6 seconds (rather than 4, as previously stated), so let’s utilize that figure. We can get an energy of 11.7 kilowatt-hours by multiplying that rating value by a rotation period of 6 seconds. This is approximately appropriate for the amount of energy required to power a UK home for one day.
To power a home, how big of a wind turbine do you need?
