What kind of diesel does a bobcat use?
With the move to a 3.4-liter diesel engine in its 700- and 800-frame-size loaders, Bobcat Co. has expanded the number of Tier 4-compliant skid-steer and compact track loaders. A Tier 4-compliant Bobcat 3.4-liter diesel engine powers the Bobcat S750, S770, and S850 skid-steer loaders; T750, T770, and T870 compact track loaders; and A770 all-wheel steer loader. Bobcat diesel engines provide excellent torque across a wide range of engine rpm while also reducing engine noise for improved operator comfort. A diesel particulate filter (DPF) is not required for Bobcat 3.4-liter diesel engines, which would necessitate a regeneration process and regular filter cleanings.

Are skid steers gas or diesel?
A raging diesel power plant sits at the heart of a skid steer or track loader, pumping energy to all of the machine’s wheels, tracks, loader arms, attachments, and other operations. This diesel engine in the beast’s belly takes in air, compresses it, and then injects it with fuel. The heat from the compressed air ignites the fuel, converting it to energy. The energy is then transferred from the diesel engine to a set of hydraulic pumps that are fastened directly to the engine’s output.
Hydraulic drive motors, charge pressure circuits, and auxiliary hydraulic circuits are powered by these hydraulic pumps, which power the loader arms, attachments, wheels, and all other hydro-mechanical functions on a skid steer or track loader. Common rail fuel systems and clever turbochargers have helped increase engine power, improve cold starting, and improve engine responsiveness.”
While your Honda Civic’s gas engine may only be used for three or four hours per day, a skid steer’s diesel engine may work 12-hour shifts seven days a week, necessitating the development of a smart engine that consumes less fuel, can withstand slave labor work shifts, lasts for decades with proper care, and maintains symmetry in its systems.
“Balance between the engine and hydraulic system is critical, and the right combination can lead to improved performance and production,” says Jeff Wilke, Kohler’s product manager for diesel engines. “The Kohler KDI engines have a great load response and provide a lot of torque even at low rpms. Skid steers may dig deeper, lift faster, push harder, and be more productive overall as a result of this. On the maintenance front, our Kohler KDI engines fulfill Tier 4 Final criteria without the use of a diesel particulate filter, making service much easier. Oil change intervals have also been increased to 500 hours since engines are now running cleaner and cooler, resulting in fewer contaminants in the oil and less heat damage. We’ve increased DPF cleaning intervals in Stage V markets where a DPF is necessary, which helps to lower replacement costs. Just remember to keep your fuel and air filtration systems in good working order because contaminants in any engine can cause problems.”
