1. When You’re Out of Sight, You’re Out of Mind:
The less visible your scooter is, the less likely it is to be targeted by a thief. Keep it covered if at all feasible. Knowing what’s underneath makes determining the difficulty of stealing it, or simply determining if it’s a car they want, more difficult.
2. Keep a safe distance:
Your scooter’s steering lock (if installed) can be a first line of defense against easy movement away from where you left it, even if it is easily defeated.
It’s even better if your ignition and steering locks are separate, requiring the burglar to break two locks in order to get away with your scooter. Many scooters have been stolen in the area since they were left unattended and just had an ignition lock.
3. The Duo Effect:
In addition to your scooter’s built-in lock, it’s preferable to use two or more locks of different types (s). Unless a burglar has been watching your scooter, he is unlikely to be prepared to deal with a variety of locks. It’s doubtful that someone will be able to carry the scooter away if one of them secures it to something immovable.
4. Keep Going:
Whatever lock you use, don’t leave it lying around on the ground where a thief might gain enough leverage to break it. If you mount the lock high and away from the ground, the thief won’t have as much leverage to wrench it open. The lock should be attached to the frame, rather than the forks or wheel, which is less desirable. Remove as much slack from the chain as possible when using a chain lock, and always secure locks with the key hole pointing down. Lock pickers will have less access to your lock, and a would-be thief will have less leverage to break your lock.
5. Keep It Safe:
While a disc lock may annoy thrill seekers, committed criminals can easily hoist the scooter into a waiting truck. You may make it more fearsome by adding a cord and anchoring it to something substantial. Even inside garages, scooters should be securely locked.
