Is ARCO truly world-class?

The difficulty is that most consumers have no idea what Top Tier gas is or why they should care. Isn’t gas just gas? Wrong.
Top Tier is a trademarked term for gasolines that fulfil specified detergent additive criteria that go above and beyond what the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires. But why would gasoline producers want to go above and beyond what the law requires?
As more automakers switched to fuel injection systems in the late 1980s, they realised that fuel injectors clogged up faster than predicted. The problem was traced down to a lack of detergent additives in most gasolines. After some prodding from these companies, the EPA finally set minimal additive regulations in 1995.
The issue was that, while the EPA guidelines addressed emission problems, they failed to account for engine longevity. As a result, EPA-approved gasoline continued to clog fuel injectors and taint combustion chambers, resulting in increased emissions and decreased fuel economy, as well as costly repairs.
Rather than waiting for the government to solve the problem, automakers worked together to develop their own detergent additive standard. The standard was finalised in 2004, and Top Tier gas was born.
But doesn’t Top Tier fuel seem more expensive? True, Top Tier petrol is more expensive, but only by 3 cents per gallon on average. For that extra 3 cents, you get a lot of value.
AAA conducted a research to evaluate how much of a difference Top Tier gasoline made. They discovered that non-Top Tier gas left an average of 660 milligrammes of deposits on each intake, whereas Top Tier gas left only 34 milligrammes, after simulating 4,000 miles in the lab for both Top Tier and non-Top Tier gas. This translates to a 95% reduction in deposits, which can save money on repair costs.
Moreover, the same study revealed that it is never too late to switch to Top Tier gas. Researchers discovered that running a “dirty engine” on Top Tier gas for only 1,000 miles cleaned off a considerable quantity of residue.
Perhaps you’re wondering if Top Tier gas is difficult to come by. It’s not the case. What is the source of ARCO gas?
The Atlantic Petroleum Storage Company was founded in 1866 and became a member of the Standard Oil trust in 1874, but when Standard Oil was broken up in 1911, it regained its independence. In 1968, ARCO was a key player in the discovery of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska’s largest oil resource. ARCO bought Sinclair Oil in 1969, led by founder Robert Orville Anderson, but eventually liquidated certain Sinclair businesses in the mid-1970s, resulting in Sinclair’s return to private ownership. The Berkeley Pit was fully dormant by 1983, barely six years after securing rights to the “Richest Hill on Earth.” By 1986, Dennis Washington, a millionaire businessman whose company Montana Resources operated a considerably smaller open-pit mine east of the abandoned Berkeley Pit, had purchased certain ARCO sites.
Sunoco purchased the Atlantic brand, which was spun off for ARCO’s East Coast stations. On the West Coast, the ARCO brand is now in use. ARCO specialises on low-cost gas by eliminating a number of unnecessary extras, such as requiring prepayment for fuel, not accepting credit cards at most sites, and charging $0.45 for debit card use.
