Chevron Corporation owns and operates Texaco, Inc. (“The Texas Company”), an American oil company. “Texaco with Techron” is the company’s flagship product. It also owned the Havoline brand of motor oil. Texaco was a stand-alone corporation until 2001, when its refining operations were integrated into Chevron Corporation, and the majority of its station franchises were sold to Shell Oil Company.

When oil was discovered at Spindletop in 1902, Joseph S. Cullinan, Thomas J. Donoghue, Walter Benona Sharp, and Arnold Schlaet created the “Texas Fuel Company” in Beaumont, Texas.

The Texas Fuel Company was not formed with the intention of drilling wells or producing crude oil. Cullinan accomplished this by forming the Producers Oil Company, a group of investors linked with The Texas Fuel Company, in 1902. Men like John W. (“Bet A Million”) Gates put about $90,000 into “certificates of interest.” When the company needed further finance, J.W. Gates offered $590,000 in exchange for company ownership in a future reorganization, Producers Oil Company and The Texas Fuel Company would be merged as Texaco.

Texaco was the only corporation selling gasoline under the same brand name in all 50 US states and Canada for many years, making it the most truly national brand among its competitors. From the mid-1940s until the 1970s, it was also one of the Seven Sisters that dominated the worldwide petroleum business. Its current emblem incorporates a white star in a crimson circle (a reference to Texas’ lone star), prompting the advertising jingles “You can trust your car to the man who wears the star” and “Star of the American Road.” Prior to the merger with Chevron, the corporation was headquartered in Harrison, New York, near White Plains.
