Okay, you should now be able to control your tabs using cards. Simply follow the instructions above and change the setting to “Default” if you ever want to go back. Google will eventually deprecate this new patch, as has been proved time and time again, and we’ll be here to discover a replacement.
If you don’t like the new bottom tab bar that came with this update but want to preserve the grid layout, you can do so by sacrificing Tab Groups as well.

This solution worked for me once I closed and relaunched the browser, however it left me with the new tab grid style, albeit without tab grouping or a bottom favicon bar. (Unfortunately, it appears that those last two features are tightly linked, since attempting to disable one without the other resulted in both being disabled.)
We’ll continue to look at it, but for now, one of these solutions should suffice.
