Over the last decade, state lawmakers have collected more than $3.1 million in campaign contributions from the utility and energy companies, according to records.
“That translates to a stacked deck and a lot of power for those people,” Olson said. “Energy and utility lobbyists contributed one out of every five dollars to the Indiana General Assembly.”
The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission is responsible for authorizing or rejecting rate hikes.
“You won’t be able to keep up with them,” Olson added. “There are so many voluminous filings that the public doesn’t stand a chance.”
Many have trackers, or fees put on for things like coal gasification plant construction or pollution control.
