What’s the deal with my NM gas bill being so high?
You’ve probably noticed that the cost of gas portion of your natural gas bill has risen in recent months. We are worried about the impact this will have on you, and we will detail the solutions available to you later in this memo to assist you in dealing with these higher expenditures. Before we head there, we’d like to talk about why the cost of gas on your bill has just increased.
First, due to a global lack of natural gas and increased demand for natural gas, gas prices have been rising globally. When demand outnumbers supply, prices rise. Because the Permian Basin one of the basins that supplies New Mexico Gas Company with gas is more intertwined than ever with world markets, companies like NMGC, which compete for natural gas, must pay higher prices.
Please keep in mind that NMGC does not manufacture natural gas; instead, it purchases natural gas from producers. We then pass on the gas we buy to you, our consumers, at no cost to you. While we do everything we can to acquire gas at the lowest possible price, the price is mostly outside our control, and when prices rise, we are forced to pass these expenses on to you, our customers. Similarly, when the price of gas charged to us falls, we pass the savings on to you. To be clear, NMGC makes no profit or profit margin on the gas we buy and sell to you. You pay exactly what we pay, no more or less.
Second, as you may recall, during the terrible cold that hit the Southwest region in February 2021, producers drastically increased the price of natural gas invoiced to NMGC and other gas utilities. As previously stated, these gas prices are passed on to our consumers without a markup, and NMGC has been given permission to begin recovering these expenses in bills in July 2021 and continue until December 2023. Since July 2021, this recovery has been reflected in your bill.
In short, market dynamics, both domestically and internationally, have pushed natural gas prices much higher this year than they were last year. This is predicted to persist into next year’s spring.
Given the current scenario, we advise you to save as much natural gas as possible. There are a few things you may do to cut down on your energy bills.

- Weatherize your home to save energy and money while also improving comfort. Sealing air leaks and adding insulation are all part of home weatherization.
- Filters on your furnaces should be cleaned or replaced more frequently, such as once a month, or as recommended by the manufacturer.
- As needed, clean the warm-air registers, vents, baseboard heaters, and radiators. Make sure that no furniture, carpeting, or draperies are in the way.
- During the day, open the drapes and blinds on your south-facing windows to let the light in. Close them at night to keep the chill out of the house.

- EnergySmart is an energy efficiency program administered by the New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority for income-qualified consumers to assist increase the energy efficiency of their homes and cut utility bills.
- The NMGC’s Small Business Covid Relief Fund helps small business owners who have been impacted by the pandemic. Those who meet the criteria will receive a one-time credit of up to $250 and will be able to apply online.
How can I save money on gas?
If your boiler is more than 12-15 years old, costs a lot of money to run, and breaks down frequently, it’s time to replace it. ‘Heating our homes accounts for over half of our annual household energy expenses,’ explains Victoria Billings, Director of Marketing at Worcester Bosch. That’s why, in order to save money on your gas bill and help the environment, you’ll need an efficient and cost-effective heating system.
‘While a new boiler can be costly (up to 1,000), it’s a wise investment because a modern one will drastically reduce your bills,’ explains Andrew Collinge. Vaillant, a heating firm, agrees, claiming a 30% reduction in rates for households who purchase one of its energy-efficient boilers.
‘All modern boilers are condensing boilers with a big heat exchanger,’ says the author. As a result, more heat is recovered and colder gases are delivered up the flue, increasing efficiency,’ explains Andrew Collinge. ‘To put it another way, new A-rated boilers (any boiler with an efficiency of over 90%) can provide 90p or more of heat for every 1 invested.’
‘In previous models, however, this is 60-80p for every 1. It’s also good for the environment to replace your old boiler. Because a more efficient boiler uses less fuel to heat your home, it reduces your carbon footprint,’ he explains.
Turn down the water temperature
You should be able to lower the temperature of the hot water that comes out of your faucets and shower heads using the controls on your boiler. You’re likely squandering gas and money if the water that comes out of it is too hot to touch, so lower it down a few degrees until you achieve the ideal temperature.
Invest in a smart thermostat
A smart thermostat allows you to control your heating system from anywhere in the world using an app on your phone or tablet. Some will store your daily routine and figure out how to make the most of it, while others will adjust their settings based on the weather. ‘Some smart thermostats can also alter the temperature of your boiler output to ensure that it’s constantly running at peak efficiency,’ Brian says.
