The Diesel Siblings are not truly brothers, despite their name and physical likeness. Kit Carson and John C. Fremont were the first European explorers to see the lake in 1843. Fremont had hoped to discover an exotic paradise. Instead, he discovered very little grass, no trees, little water, and no game. It was dubbed “disappointment island” by him. Kit Carson carved a crucifix into a rock during their stay, which can still be seen today.
Albert Carrington and other Mormon pioneers boated around the area in April 1848, a year after they arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, and dubbed it “Castle Island” because of a throne-like shape on the island’s north end.

Baptiste was able to flee after three weeks. On the island, cattle herders discovered a cow that had been murdered and tanned for leather, as well as bits of wood ripped from a ranch house. Baptiste was thought to have attempted to flee by building a homemade raft. His whereabouts and the outcome of his breakout attempt, however, were never revealed.
The island became a hotspot for precious metal mining in the early 1870s, however only 38 claims were filed in a two-year period.
Uriah J. Wenner, a judge, moved his family to the island in 1886. Because of the island’s remote location, Wenner was diagnosed with tuberculosis and transferred his family there.
He and his family lived on the island until his death in 1891, and he was even buried there. Kate, his wife, finally left the island and remarried. Her ashes were interred on the island with Uriah’s after she died in 1942.
The Barrow Land and Livestock Company leased the island in 2003.
Exotic animal species were introduced to the island with the goal of providing unusual hunting opportunities.
A feral pig was discovered near the Antelope Island causeway in October 2013.
This spurred state authorities to investigate and locate illegal species populations.
The authorities and the owners then proceeded to air-hunt the remaining animals in order to avoid the spread of the disease to the mainland.
Fremont Island was purchased as an investment in February 2018 by a consortium that includes diesel truck entrepreneur David “Heavy D” Sparks. Concerns about future plans for the island have been made by Great Salt Lake conservation groups, who have hoped that the state of Utah would purchase the site.
The Nature Conservancy, which had purchased the island to prevent commercial development, surrendered it to the State of Utah in December 2020. The state will own and operate the island for public recreation, while The Nature Conservancy will hold an easement to ensure its preservation.
