Thermacell Fuel Cartridges are not permitted on passenger aircraft. We usually recommend bringing your Thermacell Repeller and mats with you, but purchasing the Fuel Cartridges when you arrive. You can even have the items shipped to your destination ahead of time.
Can you take butane on an airplane?
In carry-on and checked baggage, lighter fluid or gas (butane) containers are prohibited. Micro torches, chef torches, utility torches, and other similar items are not considered lighters and are therefore prohibited in carry-on and checked baggage. Fuel for such torches is likewise prohibited in checked and carry-on luggage.
Can you refill Thermacell butane bottles?
– PenTool Shop Pencil Torch 242-999 (Harbor Freight Torch 94185 – has a Ronsonstyle valve)
– A screwdriver with a 1/4″ slot (for Ronson valves use a CR-V 10 specialty bit or aRonson installation tool)
Thermacell butane cartridges can be refilled in two ways: 1) remove the cartridge’s check valve and fill from the top with a modified butane can tip (sanded-down, chopped tip, etc. ), or 2) install an in-let butane refill valve.
The first thing I do when I obtain fresh butane cartridges is mark the current fuel levels in each. You only need to note the level of fuel at the top of each bottle if you plan to utilize method one (removing the check valve) (figure 2). You must note the level of the fuel on both ends of each bottle if you intend to install an in-let valve (figure 3). The marks are used for two purposes: 1) to ensure that the full mark level is reached when filling, and 2) to check for leaks (it could be days before you remember to check levels).
Because butane gas is dangerous and can cause eye problems, you should wear safety glasses or goggles whenever the gas is present. Because we’ll be reusing OEM butane cartridges, it’s critical to make sure they’re completely empty. Depress the brass valve on the cartridges’ tops until all pressure has been released (no sound is heard). Make sure there aren’t any open flames in the vicinity.
The first way is demonstrated in the Thermacell Hack. I tried this procedure for about a month and discovered that it works well and that removing the check valve is simple. The issues are that it takes longer to refill and that the refill can tip needs to be changed (which usually makes the tip easier to break when using). This can be problematic if you need to replenish in the backcountry and someone breaks the only butane refill tip you have with you (actually happened).
The remainder of this step discusses how to install a butane refill valve in the inlet. I’ve watched movies and read articles on how others have used disposable lightweight plastic valves. Regular metal in-let butane refill valves are my preference because they are easier and faster to use “harvest and set up Purchasing a valve is nearly twice as expensive as replacing one “harvesting” a valve ($8 vs. $5).
There are a few YouTube tutorials on how to do it “Metal valves from Harbor Freight Tools pencil torches were “harvested.” Because the valves from Harbor Freight are Ronson style valves, extracting them without making your own tool or acquiring a specialist tool for the process can be difficult (figure 10 displays the Gas Valve Installation Tool). The tip of the Ronson style valve is also exposed rather than recessed, which is a flaw (refer to figure 9). For about $5, I discovered a better valve for the job at my local Menards (Tool Shop 242-999 Pencil Torch). (The Tool Shop/Harbor Freight pencil torches/valves are compared in Figures 5-9.)
1. Use a 1/4″ slotted screwdriver to remove the valve from a Tool Shop 242-999 Pencil Torch. When removing the valve tip, the screwdriver will press it in slightly.
2. Drill a 13/64-inch hole “a hole in the bottle’s bottom center (figure 11). A little metal ball will be dislodged as a result of this. Using a magnet and a smaller drill bit, remove the ball. Insert the metal ball into the hole and lightly shake the container until it attaches to the smaller drill bit, then take it out (figure 12).
3. Insert the in-let valve into the hole and tighten it until it clicks into place “ring with the letter “O” (figures 13-14). Figure 15 illustrates that the valve tip is flush with the bottom and is not vulnerable to butane leakage.
4. Make a 2-part epoxy mixture and dab it over the outside edge of the valve, making sure it doesn’t get inside (figures 16-18). I’ve had no problems utilizing the valves with or without the epoxy, but I still prefer to use it as a backup “protection” (no leaks).
5. Allow the epoxy to cure for one day before adding fuel up to the container’s mark. The next day, check the level to make sure the cartridge hasn’t leaked. Filling up to the line may require filling a little, depressing the valve to release part of the gas pressure, and then filling up to the line.
Can I ship Thermacell?
To the 48 contiguous United States, all products are shipped via UPS Ground or UPS SurePost. Orders placed before 1 p.m. EST are usually sent the same day.
Is Thermacell safe to use indoors?
Use Restrictions: This insect repellent should only be used outside. Use caution while using this product indoors, in tents, or in any enclosed space. Only ThermaCELL mats should be inserted into the appliance.
Can you mail a butane lighter?
The good news is that you can ship lighters by USPS! However, you must first get formal consent. Keep in mind that any lighter packages must use ground transportation options like Retail Ground or Parcel Select Ground.
How Can I Obtain Written Approval from USPS?
A lighter that carries either flammable liquid or combustible gas is only allowed in domestic mail by surface carriage with prior written approval, according to the USPS website. Contact the USPS Pricing and Classification and Service Center for further information on how to receive written clearance (PCSC).

When you buy postage via online shipping software, you obtain the steepest reductions that the USPS usually reserves for business shippers. In fact, using shipping software can save you up to 41% on USPS ground delivery!
What kind of lighter can you take on an airplane?
The TSA (Transportation Security Administration) states that butane or Zippo lighters can be carried in carry-on luggage. However, TSA security guidelines state that butane torch lighters (blue flame lighters/jet flame lighters) are prohibited in the cabin. If you have a lighter in your pocket, you must keep it there.
Can you fly with cigarettes and a lighter?
Yes, is the surprising response to this question. However, only specific types of cigarette lighters are permitted aboard planes, and only under certain conditions.
There are distinctions between bringing a lighter in carry-on luggage and bringing a lighter in checked luggage, so make sure you understand the laws to avoid your lighter being confiscated.
Bringing a lighter on a plane in carry on
Cigarette lighters, as long as they are disposable or Zippo type lighters, are allowed in carry-on bags. They’re still allowed to have fuel in them.
Arc lighters, plasma lighters, electronic lighters, and e-lighters, on the other hand, are not permitted in carry-on luggage.
Torch lighters, pistol lighters, and any other lighter that resembles a weapon are likewise prohibited. Stick to the most basic disposable lighters, such as Bic or Zippo lighters.
Extra lighter fluid is also not permitted in carry-on luggage. If you require more than the amount contained in your disposable lighter, you will need to purchase additional lighters once you reach at your location.
You’re also not allowed to take out your cigarette lighter when flying, so keep it in your pocket or in your bag. Taking it out while flying could cause a fire hazard or be perceived as a threat, so don’t do it.
Taking a lighter on a plane in checked baggage
Because of the risk of fire, you can’t bring a lighter on an aircraft in checked baggage unless it’s empty. Remember that even a single drop counts, so even if you think it’s empty, security may disagree.
Extra lighter fluid is also prohibited in checked luggage due to the risk of fire.
You are permitted to bring a maximum of two lighters in your checked bag, but only if they are packaged in a DOT approved lighter case.
Arc lighters, plasma lighters, electronic lighters, e-lighters, gun lighters, and torch lighters are all prohibited in checked luggage, just as they are in carry-on bags.
So, even if you have a DOT-approved case, you can’t bring these lighters on a flight.
